Using Maps is a free download from Core Knowledge that teaches students basic map skills.
This unit provides information and activities to help students use maps and globes effectively. Students learn geographical terms and how to use map symbols, keys, and map scales. They are introduced to longitude and latitude along with using coordinates and degrees to find a specific location. Students also learn about time zones, maps depicting elevation and depression, and the relationship between a three-dimensional globe and a “flat” map.
The map section of the download includes five lessons covering:
- Measuring distances on a map.
- Latitude and longitude.
- Finding a location on a map.
- Time zones.
- Reading a physical map.
The maps included are beautiful and in full color. Many will be appropriate for a notebook (Transcontinental Railroad, Pony Express Route, etc.).
Pullouts cover The Big Question and vocabulary words. The Big Question sections can be used for narrations (oral or written). A glossary is included in the back.
The Teacher Guide includes ideas and questions, and a pacing chart (for those interested).
