The St. Nicholas Christmas Book

The St. Nicholas Christmas Book offers nearly 50 poems, tales, and short stories to be read aloud this Christmas season.

We’ve tried a few times to find enough short stories to put together a download set for Christmas like we did for Thanksgiving. But good, quality Christmas stories tend to longer in length…and most at this point are very well-known. Instead, how about another Christmas anthology?

Originally published in 1874, the book begins with a Christmas poem to set the pace:

Oh! holly branch and mistletoe,
And Christmas chimes where’er we go.

And stockings pinned up in a row!
These are thy gifts, December!

The St. Nicholas Christmas Book

This jolly collection of warm-hearted stories and poems includes:

  • A true story of how the Secretary of the Treasury once played Santa Claus.
  • An explanation of “A Visit from St. Nicholas” by Clement Moore.
  • A Christmas acrostic.
  • A Rocky Mountain snowed-in Christmas story.
  • A Santa poem by Kate Douglas Wiggin.
  • A look at Christmas in Bethlehem.
  • A sailors’ Christmas adventure.
  • Santa’s Christmas pony (a Belgium story).
  • So many more.

For, once, on a December night
An angel held a candle bright,

And led three wise men by its light,
To where a child was sleeping.

The St. Nicholas Christmas Book

This is the type of book to just enjoy as a read aloud for the entire family. Don’t worry — they’ll learn….

Merry Christmas!
