Everyone should have Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry on their reading list. The third book in the series, Stormy, Misty’s Foal, is now available in the public domain.
If you have a horse lover you’ll particularly enjoy the Misty series. Misty of Chincoteague was a real horse that was foaled in the 1940s. She became the focus of Marguerite Henry’s book series when the author visited Chincoteague island in the 40s to observe Pony Penning Day. The original book won a Newbery Honor in 1948.
Stormy, Misty’s Foal is the third book in the series. It is based on a real storm that occurred in 1962. While the hurricane destroys the wild herds of Chincoteague, Misty is due to birth a foal.
The original illustrations are by Wesley Dennis, who collaborated with Henry on most of the books in the series.
