Black Beauty has long been a favorite read of horse lovers. If you have a younger reader, you might appreciate this free abridged version in the public domain.
Written in 1877 by Anna Sewell, Black Beauty is told in first person, that is, by the horse himself. Yet the book has been a best seller for over a hundred years because it addresses animal cruelty, very common at the time the book was written. Because of the theme, the original book may not be suitable for more sensitive children. Black Beauty, Young Folks’ Edition meets this concern with a version suitable for younger readers, while keeping to the theme.
Young and old will be captivated as they follow Black Beauty, from pleasant meadows, through difficulties and hard life, and on into retirement.
When your children are ready, they will have a better appreciation for the original. In the meantime, they can enjoy the classic story of a horse that has withstood the test of time.
