Our Flag {Free Download}

“Our Flag” is a free 52-page download from the Joint Committee on Printing covering the history and the customs of the United States flag.

This Congressional publication briefly describes the history of the flag, and sets forth the practices and observances appropriate to its display.

This beautiful color document starts with a description of the night of September 13, 1814, when Francis Scott Key viewing the battle at Fort McHenry penned the words to the national anthem — “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

We then learn about:

  • The history of the Stars and Stripes.
  • Early flags and star arrangements.
  • Historical flags.
  • Flag “anatomy.”
  • Flag laws and regulations.
  • Instructions for presenting, folding, and caring for the flag.
  • State flags for each state of the Union along with a brief description of the flag’s background and symbolism.
  • Flag Day.
  • The Great Seal of the Untied States.
  • Fort McHenry.
  • The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
  • “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

There are many opportunities to cover the background and customs of United States flag — whether covering history, or various holidays. “Our Flag” makes a nice addition — and it’s free!
