Millions of Cats is a children’s classic and Newbery Honor Book of 1929.
The picture book centers on an old couple who living alone decide they need a cat. The “very old man” takes off for the hills and finds one simply littered with cats!
Cats here, cats there,
Cats and kittens everywhere,
Hundreds of cats,
Thousands of cats,
Millions and billions and trillions of cats.
Well. Plenty to choose from. So he finds “the prettiest” cat to take home.
But then….
He saw a black-and-white one.
A fuzzy grey one.
And one way down in the corner.
And a beautiful black one….
As you can imagine, he had a difficult time choosing the prettiest cat. And ended up choosing them all.
It was very funny to see those hundreds and thousands and millions and billions and trillions of cats following him.
On the way home they drank a pond dry. And ate a grassy hill to dust.
In the end the cats got into a fight over who was the prettiest. And I’ll let you find out how the story ends.
Children have loved this story by Wanda Gág for decades now. And it is still in print. But you can read it for free!
