Butterflies Worth Knowing by Clarence M. Weed is one of the resources referred to in our Free Nature Studies. The focus is on learning by observing.
In this little book an attempt has been made to discuss the more abundant and widely distributed butterflies of eastern North America from the point of view of their life histories and their relations to their surroundings.
Weed was a well-known entomologist and naturalist of his time (late 1800s through early 1900s). He investigated by observation insects, birds, (and of particular interest) “harvestmen” or daddy longlegs.
The first part of this book provides helpful information about butterflies including butterfly transformations, migrations, colorations, and defense mechanisms. It also includes information on how to rear butterflies from caterpillars, and photograph butterflies, among other topics.
The second part of the book illustrates the different butterfly families with 32 color plates for identification. There is an extensive index in the back to help.
Butterflies Worth Knowing was part of the Little Nature Library published in 1922.
The day of the field naturalist has come again and the butterflies are well worthy of careful observations by many interested students.
We have already included quite a few butterfly resources. But this can be a helpful identification book at a great price! Free!
