Old Paths for Young Pilgrims was originally published by the American Tract Society with a view of encouraging young and inexperienced Christians in their walk with the Lord:
THE Conflict between the Church and the world, of which our Lord spoke, still rages. The hostility from which He and His apostles met their death is unabated. But the form of manifestation is changed. They had to stand fast against a world which persecuted; we against a world which allures and seduces. But its caresses may be even more dangerous than its frowns. The traitor’s kiss, now as then, may be more deadly than “the multitude with swords and staves.”
The book attempts to accomplish this task by drawing from the old paths found in the Bible:
- Remembering that old things have passed away.
- Choosing whom you will serve.
- Praying without ceasing.
- Performing our common every-day tasks as unto the Lord.
- Dealing with self-justifying sins that are not quite so obvious, such as “not doing.”
- Keeping the Sabbath joyfully.
- Giving.
- Rejoicing in innocent amusements.
- Where and how we find and stay in peace (many older Christians can use this reminder!).
- Finding suitable reading material.
- Understanding what it means to be members of the body of Christ.
- Being steadfast and disciplined in the faith.
In each of these broader topics you will find many jewels. For example, in the chapter on prayer, the author explains the three-fold point of meeting our own needs, interceding for others, and praising God. And of course, mercy and forgiveness when we fail Him.
And yet, even this description cannot express the whole of the content. What do you do when things do not go as planned? Why is it important to complete the tasks at hand without compromise? What do you do on the Sabbath?
In all, it is a book that will clue young people in on what it means to walk the walk — faithfully, day by day.
Ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest. — Jer. vi. 16.
