Summer is a perfect time to get into the habit of nature study. If you are still looking for a nature study resource to get you going, you might enjoy Nature Study Made Easy by Edward B. Shallow.
Published in 1909, this classic takes advantage of several elements homeschool families will be familiar with:
- Lessons in story form.
- Narration.
- Lab.
The book is written to children ages 10–11 but adaptable to all ages of study. The lessons can be approached in any order, making it easy to study a particular plant when it is more available. Oral or written narrations are encouraged in the Language Lessons found at the end of each lesson. Notes of the Lessons beginning on pg. 111 are written for the teacher or mentor to help guide the study.
Covers all types of plants, trees, and their characteristics:
- Plants.
- Seeds.
- Roots.
- Leaves.
- Life cycle.
- Conifers.
- Fruits.
- Moss.
This is a wonderful, nicely illustrated introduction to nature that you can begin in the summer and continue year round — and it’s free!
