The Revolutionary War {Free Unit Study}

I think we’d all agree that the Revolutionary War as a topic is rather broad! Jennifer Steward of Steward Ship Unit Studies wrote a free Unit Study: The Revolutionary War.

It begins with background information and a timeline that starts in 1763 “when the Thirteen Colonies were enjoying peace and prosperity after the end of the French and Indian War” and continues through the Treaty of Paris signed in 1783.

With that background in hand, we are ready to tackle the topic. Included in the study are:

  • Recommended reading lists (read-alouds; books for young students; early, intermediate, and upper-level readers; nonfiction helps; and activity books).
  • Handwriting/copywork practice.
  • Timeline creation.
  • Poetry.
  • Writing.
  • Mapping.
  • Art.
  • Crafts
  • Research.

Disciplines covered include history, geography, art, language arts, and reading/literature.

This Revolutionary War unit is an excellent framework that can be further expanded (or contracted) according to your purpose. Because the topic is so broad there are many rabbit trails to follow depending on the interest of the family and child.
