Helps for New Homeschoolers: Make Memories

It will go faster than you think. Make memories.

It seems like yesterday that my daughter and I first began to share those hours together each day “studying.” I learned right along side her. That was when my REAL education began, a couple of college degrees and laudatory accomplishments not withstanding.

And since our last year of homeschooling our children, I am still learning. But time seems to have gotten away from me.

I made it a point early on — a contract, if you will, at the beginning before and with God — that I would enjoy this time with the children that He had so graciously blessed me with. I knew ahead of time that it would go fast, that these years would be swallowed up in the blink of an eye. So I was INTENTIONAL about the time we shared. I protected it, invested in it, cherished it, and was so, so thankful for it.

Yet, in spite of all of this, if I had a chance to do it over, I would STILL try to pack in more — fill our days with more love, and more joy, and more fun, and more learning, and more hugging, and more kisses, and more laughter, and oh the books we would read again, and again, and again!

What will your children remember?

When our grown children look back on their childhood, what will they remember? Will they remember the gifts we purchased for them? The tidiness of the house? The time we spent scouring the homeschool catalogs for the “perfect” curriculum? The money we spent getting them into the “best” programs?

Or will they remember the time we invested in them? The mountain of lovely memories we built with them? The many expressions of love with which they were showered? The encouragement they received as they grew? The support they received as we launched them into the world?

It will go faster than you think.
