Many home educators are familiar with the Core Knowledge foundation founded by E. D. Hirsh Jr., author of Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know. Most homeschoolers are familiar with the What Your nth Grader Needs to Know from the Core Knowledge Series based on the Core Knowledge foundation guidelines for learning. These books have been used in many homes with success by simply letting a child read through the text.
The Core Knowledge scope and sequence on which the series is based has in the past been one of the ways the non-profit foundation was funded. However, recently The Core Knowledge Sequence PreK and Core Knowledge Sequence: Content and Skill Guidelines for Grades K–8 have been made available as a free downloads at their site.
The Core Knowledge Sequence is a detailed outline of specific content and skills to be taught in language arts, history, geography, mathematics, science, and the fine arts. As the core of a school’s curriculum, it is intended to provide a coherent, content specific foundation of learning, while allowing flexibility to meet local needs.
This homeschool-friendly road map is a very specific plan in which each year builds on the knowledge of the previous. While no home educator will likely use it as is, it is nonetheless a valuable tool in offering guidance and inspiration for the homeschool handy-mom.
