Trial and Triumph ~ Review

Trial and Triumph: Stories from Church History by Richard M. Hannula is a collection of 46 biographies aimed at children of important individuals in church history.

The Psalmist calls us to praise the Lord and “tell of His works with songs of joy.” God’s greatest works are not the creation of the mountains and seas but His acts of saving love, which transform sinners into children of God. These stories were not written to exalt great Christian men and women. They were written to exalt the Lord who made them great.

The stories are covered in chronological order from the early church to recent times. Biographies include:

  • Polycarp.
  • Constantine.
  • Boniface.
  • Charlemagne.
  • Francis of Assisi.
  • Wycliff.
  • Luther.
  • Calvin.
  • Bunyan.
  • Edwards.
  • Wesley.
  • Livingstone.
  • Carmichael.
  • Spurgeon.
  • Lewis.
  • And more!

Ideas for further reading are provided at the end of the book.

Like all books, this title may not be suitable for every family, or for each member of a family. Some of the topics covered can be difficult for sensitive listeners. As always you know your children best.

Suggestions
  • Read one story aloud each day or each week, depending on your schedule.
  • Have each child provide a written or oral narration depending on his age.
  • Add each individual covered to a history timeline.
  • Older students can choose one or two individuals to study further and write a character sketch.
  • Another option is to include the readings in a chronological study of history, fitting them in where chronologically appropriate.
