4-H Science Toolkit {Free}

From the 4-H Youth Development program at Cornell, you can download a free 197-page 4-H Science Toolkit. What a fantastic resource for the DIY Homeschool Handy Mom!

These Toolkits are one piece of the National 4-H Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) initiative. Recognizing that U.S. youth are falling behind in science and technology, 4-H youth development staff are combining the Cooperative Extension system’s well-established outreach system with the cutting-edge research and resources of the nation’s land grant universities to bolster science, engineering and technology skills in youth throughout the country using initiatives such as the Toolkits Series.

The download is packed with activities, printables, background resources, and more covering the following areas of science:

  • Entomology.
  • Astronomy.
  • Animal science.
  • Flight.
  • Geographic science.
  • Weather.

Although each section differs in content, they all include activities structured with a main idea or purpose, followed by questions that will be answered by the activity, the activity’s steps, and discussion questions that can be used for narrations. You’ll also find useful vocabulary, extension ideas, and background resources. The supplies required to complete each activity are also listed, so you can plan ahead.

Many of the pages in the download would work very well in creating a science notebook. You could have one science notebook for each broad area of study listed above.

For the homeschool mom, this resource can form the base of one or more years of science studies — particularly at the younger ages for which the download is geared (3rd grade and up).

Excellent resource — and it is free!
