Free WWI Interactive

Here is a free online interactive from the U.S. Army Center of Military History that goes along perfectly with our WWI unit study! The purpose of the site is stated in the welcome:

The American Expeditionary Forces (AEF), formed in 1917 for service in Europe, represents the beginnings of the twenty-first-century Army. Fittingly, we will mark the centennial of the United States’ pivotal involvement in World War I in 2017 through 2019.

We will commemorate this crucial time in our history through a series of events in which we will Honor the service of more than four million American soldiers, Remember the sacrifices of the more than 300,000 killed, wounded, or captured, and Educate the force and the American public about the accomplishments that added new chapters to the proud history of the nation’s Army.

There is a great deal of territory covered in this interactive. The easiest way to navigate the site is to simply begin at the beginning with the Prologue. Using the navigation tools on the left, you’ll move on to the Pre-War Army, Preparing for War, On the Western Front, and Post-War Duties.

Other areas of interest include:

  • A timeline.
  • A series of lesson plans that each include an excellent downloadable presentation, activities, projects, and quizzes.
  • Videos.
  • Maps that can be downloaded.

Perfect resource to complement your Memorial Day studies. We have also added this excellent resource to our How World War I Began unit study!
