The Purist

Perhaps you have come across a purist.  Perhaps it was a classical education purist, or a Charlotte Mason purist.  Or perhaps it was a more specific purist — a Well-Trained Mind purist, or an Ambleside Online purist.  There are Traditional Education Purists.  And natural purists.

We all should choose our own paths, and if our paths are those of a purist, so be it.  We don’t answer to one another for our choices.  However, perhaps the purist should also be accepting of the eclectic, the non-purist who marches to a different drummer.

There is only one thing that is pure — the Word of God.  Anything short of that falls short of the standard of “purism.”  Or put another way, anything other than the Word of God will be fallible.

So the eclectic will probably not follow the same path as a purist, because it won’t be going in the direction she aspires to go.  You might wonder what direction that is exactly.  How will her way measure up?

Ah.  There is the rub.  Only God knows the way each of us should go.  But we can rest in His promises, commit our ways to Him, and let Him lead us in a way that will benefit those of whom He has given us stewardship. And since it is Him we will answer to, we can be OK with that….

I am reminded that I have a unique purpose in life that God has given me.  I could spend a lifetime trying to make His purpose for someone else fit me, but I would wear myself out, and in the end it would be a waste of time.

Anne Graham Lotz, My Heart’s Cry

Have you come across a purist?  It’s OK.  Let the purist go along in her way.  You just keep going in His (even if it would appear you are following hers).

Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying,
“This is the way, walk in it,”
Whenever you turn to the right hand
Or whenever you turn to the left.

Isaiah 30:21
