As we age, recovery gets harder. Simple exertions take a larger toll. We don’t “bounce” so well, as we once did.
When you are over 50, and still running, you have to be more careful about monitoring your liquid intake so as to avoid dehydration. Nutrition concerns loom and steps must be taken to refuel your body with the essentials it needs. You have to make sure the surfaces you are running on won’t aggravate muscle, bone, nerve, and ligament deterioration. Even with several ounces of prevention, the cure doesn’t always come through for you. Each run might take its toll the next day. And the next. Energy wanes. Pain makes itself apparent. Even your favorite shoes start falling apart. Your mind starts playing the simple refrain, “maybe it’s time to hang it up.”
I’ve seen a fair number of homeschool moms suffer from the same symptoms. They’ve put in the time, taken all of the right steps, made the appropriate provisions, thrown everything they have into the endeavor — and then … the payoff isn’t as great as it should be. They have spent years spending themselves. The mind clogs, the heart chokes, the nerves fray. They are weary. Their efforts are not producing the boost they need to keep going.
There is one ingredient to homeschooling that can never be forgotten, given second place, short shrift, or left out — God! He will never push us beyond what we are able. He will be our strength. He will take our burden. He will give us rest (Matthew 11:28).
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as eagles;
they shall run, and not be weary; and
they shall walk, and not faint.
At some point, it will be time to hang it up. The old shoes will take their place alongside memories, scrapbooks, and a crown of silver.
And having pursued, persisted in, and completed your mission, you will have earned the rest. And at the end you will hear those longed-for words:
Well done, good and faithful servant…. Enter into the joy of your lord.
