July 2012 Digital Edition of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine – Free

cover 7/12 tosThe July 2012 Digital Edition of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine is available free. This edition includes:

  • A wonderful article by Karen Andreola on using living books to learn how to learn language.   She refers to The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease (also recommended by Dr. Beechick) in which he says “Each read-aloud, then, is a language arts lesson, bolstering the four language arts: the art of reading, the art of listening, the art of writing, the art of speaking.” We can all use this reminder on the value of natural ways of learning.
  • Another standout article is by Dr. Mary Hood, “How to Select the Right Curriculum.”  She has homeschooled her children for 25 years, written several homeschool books, and has her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.  Think she knows a thing or two about the subject?  “[L]ook at your children as individuals and select experiences, methods, and materials based on their individual needs.”  Sage advice for all!
  • Also look for “Journaling: The Power of Personal Stories” by Laura Malone for ways to include notebooking in your home.

You can also read The Old Schoolhouse on your Apple, Kindle Fire, and Android devices.  Here’s how.
