Presidents Day

white houseIn 1800, congress declared February 22, George Washington’s birthday, a federal holiday.  In 1971, the holiday was switched to the 3rd Monday in February, falling between the birthdays of Washington and Abraham Lincoln, which is the 15th of February.  It wasn’t until the Mid 1980s that the term “Presidents Day” made its appearance reflecting an honoring of the office of President.  Officially?  It’s still Washington’s Birthday.  Are you looking for some ideas for President’s Day? Memorial Day

Memorial Day, or Decoration Day as it was first known, originally honored those lost in the Civil War. In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson signed a bill making Memorial Day an official legal holiday to remember all of the men and women who have died in the course of serving our country. Father’s Day

father and son fishingSonora Louise Smart Dodd is credited with originating the idea of honoring fathers in 1909. After listening to sermon on Mother’s Day, Mrs. Dodd thought it would be nice to have a day to honor her father, who had raised his family as a widower. Mrs. Dodd’s idea took hold, but it was not until 1972 that Father’s Day was finally made an official holiday. Here are a few ideas to help you make this Father’s Day a special one.

Thanksgiving Day

cornucopiaPresident George Washington declared a day of “PUBLICK THANSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to eftablifh a form of government for their safety and happiness” in 1789, creating the first national day of Thanksgiving. But it was a letter from Sarah J. Hale, editor of Ladies’ Magazine, who is credited with helping establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. Her letter to President Abraham Lincoln led to his 1863 proclamation establishing the last Thursday in November as a national Thanksgiving holiday. The official date was later moved to the fourth Thursday in November as a compromise between President Franklin D. Roosevelt and congress, Roosevelt preferring the fourth Thursday to provide more time for holiday shopping. Christmas
